ENGLAND v IRAN KICK-OFF 1pm Kane faces yellow card for OneLove gesture
HARRY KANE says he is happy to risk being BOOKED for wearing the ‘OneLove’ armband today.
The FA have been left in the dark by FIFA over what will happen if the England captain (left)
defies football’s governing body.
They have told FIFA they are willing to pay any fine for every game at the World Cup so the Tottenham striker can wear the armband. But
they are unaware of how FIFA officials will react if Kane has the armband on for the Three Lions Group B opener against Iran.
Kane confirmed yesterday he still intends to wear the armband, amid suggestions it could draw a yellow card.
He said: “I think we’ve made it clear as a team that we want to wear the armband.
“I know the FA are talking to FIFA at the moment and I think by game time tomorrow they will have the decision.”
The FA wrote to FIFA in September informing them of their intention to wear the OneLove armband.
But they received no response and, on Saturday, FIFA
UNITED: Kane and
Southgate released the captain’s armband they want all teams to wear in Qatar.
Captains of nine European nations want to sport the OneLove armbands in Qatar, a country which criminalises same-sex relationships.
However, they could face fines or be booked, and there are also fears players could be told to remove the armband or they won’t be allowed on the pitch.
The OneLove armbands will promote diversity, inclusion and anti-discrimination in Qatar.
Meanwhile, manager Gareth Southgate confirmed England players will take the knee before today’s game and during the World Cup.
He said: “We feel it’s a strong statement that will go around the world, in particular for young people to see that inclusivity is important.”
