HUGH Dennis says he started his career in comedy after being hit on the head by a golf ball.

The actor and comedian, best known for Mock the Week and Outnumbered, was struck while playing a round with friends after finishing his A-levels.

The 60-year-old said: “I was on the green when my friend decided to launch a lofted eight iron... and it split my head open.

“I had to have half of my head shaved because I had seven stitches.

“The next day it was speech day at the school, and I was head boy so I had to make a speech. I turned up looking like a punk. I thought I would explain what had happened... and people laughed.

“I thought, ‘I rather like when people laugh when you speak.’

“It was a very formative moment in my life that I owe to a golf ball.”

Hugh, who was head boy at private University College School, London, went on to Cambridge University.

He joined the uni’s Footlights performing group and met future comedy partner Steve Punt.

COMEDIAN Hugh Dennis says he became a stand-up after getting hit on the head with a golf ball.

A slice of good luck that teed up his career nicely!
