CHOICE With Mike Ward

I reckon there should be an entire TV channel dedicated to guessing games.

Why not? The main channels are already crammed with them.

There’s Would I Lie To You?, for example (the best of the lot), plus the likes of I Can See Your Voice, This Is MY House and those Saturday night shows where mystery celebs prance around the stage in crazy costumes. “Which reasonably famous person with no better work offers tonight could possibly be behind that disguise?” we love to ask ourselves. (Me, I always yell: “Sir Keir Starmer!”, as it’s bound to be him sooner or later.)

It’s this whole joining-in-athome thing that explains these shows’ popularity. It’s great that our own guesses are always as good as those of the people doing the guessing on the telly (a good example of this being the weather forecast).

So no doubt you’ll be thrilled to hear there’s yet another such show kicking off tonight, this time on Channel 4. Hosted by Strictly’s Ellie Taylor, it’s called YOU WON’T BELIEVE THIS (10pm).

Each round sees four members of the public recounting something amazing that’s happened to them.

But three of them are telling porkies. As hard-nosed detective-types interrogate them, looking to pull their stories apart, Ellie sits behind a two-way mirror with a contestant who attempts to identify the truthteller. If you pick the right person you get a £5,000 prize (by “you”, I obviously mean the contestant on the telly).

Pick a fibber and it’s the fibber who gets the cash.
