LUNA TOPS OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD NAMES
PARENTS are looking to the heavens for inspiration when naming their baby.
Some of the most popular names for newborns relate to space and the cosmos.
Luna – Latin for moon – is the most popular for girls, with 7,137 female babies given the name since 1996. Others include Andromeda, Star, Nova and Aurora.
The study was carried out by parenting website Wicked Uncle.
A spokesman said: “For many of us, space is something that fascinates us, so it’s easy to see why some choose to take inspiration from astronomy when choosing a name for their little one.” The researchers found that the number of tots given space names rose from just 48 in 1996 to 2,506 by 2020.
It also showed that most of these were female.
The study of Office for National Statistics data also revealed chemistry-inspired names.
The top four were all for boys. Calvin topped the list with 2,438 babies given the name, followed by Magnus (1,300), Newton (81) and Neon (13).
Geology was also an inspirational source, with Ruby topping the list, followed by Jade, Jasper and Pearl.
PARENTS are increasingly giving their children cosmos-inspired names like Luna, Nova and Aurora.
Sounds like they’ve got their heads in the clouds to us!
