TOTAL TURN-OFF

Wife No4: ANNE OF CLEVES

-

WHEN he set eyes on her in real life, Henry was shocked that the German-born princess didn’t match the flattering portrait he had seen by Hans Holbein.

The king, now sporting a 50-inch waist, planned to wed Anne in 1540 to help forge political alliances.

But he had been annoyed when she fended off his clumsy attempts to kiss her, storming out and saying: “I like her not!” They were unhappily married soon after.

Despite being no oil painting himself, he was also put off by her pock-marked face and body odour, with legend saying he nicknamed her the “Flanders Mare”.

Their marriage was annulled after just six months, having been declared unconsummated.

But Anne got lucky – pensioned off, she outlived Henry and all his other wives. She died in 1557 aged 42.
