A family at war’s no fun!

-

MY kids and parents cannot get on.

Our teenage sons and daughter brand my mum and dad “out of touch” and “dinosaurs”.

I love them all but family gatherings have become a battlefield.

They’re all really opinionated, especially about politics and religion.

I can see things from both sides: my kids can be annoying but then so can my father.

I’m already dreading Christmas because the kids are now even more confident and intolerant than ever.

JANE SAYS: No-one needs a stressful Christmas.

Take control by speaking separately to your parents and kids in advance.

Make it clear you don’t want any friction.

Your father may not approve of your kids’ views but it’s not his place to constantly goad and criticise.

Stand up to him. Remind him that you are in charge in your own home. But also there is no excuse for rudeness and your children must be told to remain civil and respectful.

Families need to stick together. If they really must bicker, tell them to take their arguments out into the garden or down the pub.
