O’Neil a Bourne winner

- ■ by ALEX CROOK

BOURNEMOUTH will make Gary O’Neil their permanent head coach after he impressed new American owner-inwaiting Bill Foley.

O’Neil is set to sign a contract of up to two-and-half-years.

The Cherries did hold talks with former Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa but it appears O’Neil has done enough to convince Foley he was the man for the job during his 12-game stint in interim charge.

O’Neil went unbeaten in his first six games after replacing the sacked Scott Parker in August before a run of four straight defeats.

Bournemouth beat Everton twice in the EFL Cup and Premier League in the final week before the World Cup break to enhance O’Neil’s claims.

The Cherries are awaiting Premier League approval on Las Vegasbased businessman Foley’s £120m purchase of the south coast club.
