Kane an England concern
ENGLAND captain Harry Kane has handed the Three Lions a major scare.
The striker was taken to a private hospital in Doha last night for scans on an ankle problem.
Kane was on the wrong end of a nasty challenge during the second half of England’s 6-2 thrashing of Iran on Monday.
He continued during the game and appeared to be fine at full-time.
But he complained of soreness yesterday and failed to train with the rest of the squad before being examined by the England medical staff.
It was decided Kane should be sent to hospital for further examinations.
And Gareth Southgate has now been left sweating on his skipper being fit in time for the game against USA on Friday.
Southgate can ill afford to be without his talisman as he looks to book a place in the knockout stages.
The FA were remaining tight-lipped last night – but were hopeful the problem
would not be too serious. Something else that is worrying the England boss is VAR – which he fears could wreck England’s World Cup.
Southgate wants clarity from FIFA over penalty box fouls after his side were denied a blatant penalty against Iran on Monday.
Harry Maguire was wrestled to the floor by Roozbeh Cheshmi but VAR did not overrule referee Raphael Claus’ decision not to give a spot-kick.
Southgate revealed his side were shown an example from their 5-0 win over Albania last year when Kalvin Phillips blocked an opponent off and Maguire was denied a goal before the tournament.
That was an example of a clear foul that would be given, but the England boss now has concerns over what will be deemed a foul in the area after John Stones conceded a late penalty against Iran.
Southgate said: “We need some clarification really as to how it’s going to be.
“Goals are going in and we don’t know whether they stand or not.”
