GERMAN LESSON & SPAIN THRILLER

- ■ by ANDY DEAN

GERMANY were humbled at the hands of Japan as the 2022 World Cup threw up another day of thrills and spills.

Just 24 hours after Saudi Arabia stunned Argentina in one of the greatest shocks of all time, the Germans went down 2-1 in Group E.

Takuma Asano and Ritsu Doan made themselves Japanese heroes with the goals to cancel out Ilkay Gundogan’s opener.

German boss Hansi Flick said: “We can only blame ourselves.”

There was no such drama for Spain, though, as they started their campaign with a 7-0 demolition of Costa Rica.
