BEGUM CAN ‘BE THREAT’
PEOPLE trafficked to Syria and “brainwashed” can still be a threat, the Home Office said in Shamima Begum’s appeal against losing her British citizenship.
Begum was 15 when she travelled from Bethnal Green, east London, to Islamic State territory.
Her citizenship was revoked on national security grounds when she was found in a refugee camp in 2019 after spending four years in Isis territory.
Sir James Eadie KC, for the Home Office, said her exposure to Isis was “an almighty problem”.
He added it was possible to be “trafficked” and “desensitised” in the “most unacceptable way” and yet “still be a security threat”.
Begum’s lawyers say she was “transported” to Syria for “sexual exploitation”.
The case continues.
