Beer we go again

OAP, 92, PUB REGULAR SINCE 1954

- ■ by LUKE GREEN and CHARLES WADE-PALMER

A 92-YEAR-OLD bloke has had a pint in his local every day since 1954 – only missing out during lockdown.

Bernard Bland has been part of the furniture at Nunsthorpe Tavern for nearly seven decades.

He said: “The cost of a pint when I first started coming here was about eight shillings and 10 pence (around 45p in today’s money).

The pensioner has noticed fewer punters in the pub due to the cost-ofliving crisis.

“The place used to be full but with balancing the cost of electric and gas nowadays, going to the pub isn’t something everyone has the money to do.”

Bernard revealed how he spent a lot of time at the Grimsby boozer with Betty, his wife of nearly 70 years.

He said: “We always end up in here, it’s like her wheelchair has a Sat Nav that takes us here, but it’s great because everyone is so friendly.”
