Let’s all raise a glass to local legend Bernard

-

❑ All beer fans should raise a glass to Bernard Bland who has been drinking in his local, Nunsthorpe Tavern in Grimsby since 1954. Cheers Bernard, good on you! Dave Pinfold, Stockport.

❑ The article in the daily star re OAP 92 pub regular since 1954. When I first started drinking in 1959 I used to pay 1 shilling (5p today’s money). I never realised beer had gone down that much between 1954 and 1959. Bring back the old days !!!!!!!????? best regards Bob the Boozer

❑ In 1954 we could get p***ed on 45p. Good luck Bernard. Alex

❑ Rishi Sunak intends to reduce net migration. That horse has already bolted through the yawning open gate. Blame the warmonger Tony Blair and his open door policies on immigration. Half a million migrants in this year alone, all needing housed. Not to mention hospital needs, doctors, dental and schooling. But all of these services are on their knees now!!

Cumbrian Kev.

❑ Angst: For most of its existence the NHS has operated under Tory governments, who have repeatedly showered it with more money just like Labour. Surely if they wanted to privatise it they would have done so a long time ago? The SNP run it in Scotland and Labour run it in Wales and it operates on similar lines no more effectively. What would the Tories have to do to convince you otherwise? They won’t even offer tax relief on private health insurance even though it would benefit many of what were their core supporters. Rupert Fast

❑ It’s a frightening time for the vulnerable, elderly and disabled who will require hospital admission and treatment this winter. Firstly, ambulance handover delays have reached the worst level on record, with patients left stranded outside hospital. Secondly, when patients are eventually admitted, staff shortages are impacting on the quality of care they receive. If this is not bad enough, nurses are now going on strike. Can it get any worse? Yes, it can, and it will! Gary Freestone

❑ I missed an important meeting in London during the last rail strikes. It probably cost me a really good job. Generally I think the train workers have lost much of the public backing. Time to get back to work and do what you’re paid well to do! Mr Joe public

❑ Tony in Hull your right we have no shortage of workers if we get them on dole retrained its sorted. Stockton Jeff

❑ There’s nothing discriminatory about it, rj. It’s a fact that over 50s, particularly men, are more likely to be unemployed and find it harder to get back into work. Just be thankful they put on a jobs fair aimed at that particular age group. The last time they held one locally it was supposedly all ages, but the employers present were only interested in 18–25 year olds. RedLeader

❑ ah well, here i am, 71, copd, emphysema, aching joints. Cold nights r here so it’s back 2 bedclothes... long johns tucked in2 wooly socks, tshirt, wooly jumper, wooly gloves,& wooly hat 2 keep my bald head warm. Y on earth did i do 47 very hard yrs as a plumber 2 end up like this?? Surely can’t b right can it? Bantaman.

❑ Tip for keeping warm without heating on: cover feet and head. Thick wooly socks and slippers, wolly hat too –save a fortune! Alex, Darwen

❑ A postman got married and instead of carrying his new bride over the threshold into their house, he folded her up and pushed her through the letterbox. Stewart&Geoff, Tursdale, Co Durham

❑ whenever i see ballet i always think to myself: “why don’t they just get taller people?” Tony worksop

❑ Publunch - to cure gout, stop drinking wine with your faggots and peas! LAURENCE
