Eubank’s new £1m pay day

- ■ by CHRIS McKENNA

CHRIS EUBANK JR is set to pocket over £1m for his showdown with Liverpool puncher Liam Smith.

He has landed another seven-figure pay day following the collapse of his clash with Conor Benn.

Eubank Jr and former WBO light-middleweight champion Smith will face each other on January 21 at Manchester Arena.

The Brighton boxer was set to face Benn in a battle between the two sons of British boxing legends. But Benn failed two drug tests and the second one forced the British Boxing Board of Control to shelve the bout.

Eubank Jr is moving on and it understood his pay will depend on how the fight sells on Sky Sports Box Office but it is expected to be more than £1m.

The sum is less than his guarantee for the Benn fight but is still one of the highest of his career.

Eubank Jr and Smith was pursued earlier in the year before the former was offered the Benn fight.

But now he will take on the Scouser in another all-English clash.

He said: “Has he [Smith] been in there with some good fighters? Yes. Are they on my level? No. He’s a competent fighter but class beats competence every day of the week.

“It’s a good opportunity for me to show I’m twice the fighter that he is.”
