Boos as Lions serve up pile of Yankee doodoo

- ■ from SIMON MULLOCK in Al Khor

ENGLAND remain on course to reach the last 16 of the World Cup – but there were boos from disgruntled fans after watching them labour to a draw against the United States.

The lame Three Lions claimed a point to stay top of Group B but after the euphoria of the 6-2 victory over Iran on Monday this was a grim performance.

And some supporters, who had travelled 3,000 miles, voiced their disapproval at the end.

Skipper Harry Kane said: “It wasn’t our best performance for sure. We didn’t quite have the final product. But a great clean sheet puts us in a great position.”

England – who only need a draw against Wales on Tuesday – have now played the US at three World Cup tournaments and are yet to win a game.

And the Americans created the better of the chances with Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic hitting the bar while Weston McKennie volleyed over as Gareth Southgate’s men were second best.

Southgate said: “We didn’t quite have that same zip as against Iran. But that’s tournament football.”
