The Great Brit play-off
9 UP FOR TERRY
■ AN England superfan meets other supporters at his ninth World Cup – 40 years after his first in Spain.
Terry Matson, who was in Mexico to witness Maradona’s “hand of God” goal in 1986 and Italy for the penalty shoot-out misery against Germany in 1990, reckons England are just too “unpredictable”.
■ The 61-year-old bricklayer from Kent said: “All the World Cup trips have been good in their different ways.”
Terry was given a ticket to Spain ’82 as a 21st birthday present from his parents and has been to most cups since.
■ He stayed at home for USA ’94 due to England’s failure to qualify and he was forced to miss France ’98 after suffering a trapped nerve in his back.
