War VC fetches fortune
A VICTORIA Cross won by one of Britain’s “bravest soldiers” has sold for £327,000.
Lt Col Bertram BestDunkley, from York, was killed by a shell while waistdeep in a flooded trench at the Battle of Passchendaele at Ypres, Belgium, in 1917.
The World War One hero had earlier survived the Somme and the first-ever mustard gas attack.
He led his Lancashire Fusiliers to retake positions seized by German troops.
His medals were sold by Spink & Son of London. Auctioneer Marcus Budge said Lt Col Best-Dunkley “was a true hero and this price reflects that”.
