Lotto-winning beast under pressure to give to charity

LOTTO rapist Iorworth Hoare has gained full access to his £7.2million fortune after a long legal dispute.

Hoare, 70, won the jackpot while serving a life sentence. He bought his winning lottery ticket at an Asda store in 2004 while on weekend leave.

But he was initially prevented from unlimited access to his money under the conditions of his release on licence. It is understood he was given £8,666 a month when freed.

He began legal action to win control of his jackpot in 2008, three years after being released, and can now access the fortune.

“There was nothing legally which could be done to stop him in the end,” said a Home Office source.

Hoare spent 30 years in jail from 1973 for one rape, three attempted rapes and two indecent assaults.

He was freed in 2005 from Shepton Mallet Prison, Somerset, but pursued for damages by one of his victims.

Shirley Woodman was attacked and sexually assaulted by Hoare in Roundhay Park, Leeds, in 1988. The great grandmother died last January aged 92.

She was awarded £50,000 in compensation, and Hoare had to pay her legal bill of £537,885.20, plus his own £239,583 costs in 2011.

Shirley’s daughter said he should give his money away to charity like her late mum did. “It’s what he should be doing with his money,” said Shelley Wolfson.

But Hoare has used his money to build a property portfolio and huge art collection, including a Picasso.

He declined to comment when approached. Asked about the legal case, he said: “I’m not saying owt.”

A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: “All offenders released on licence are subject to strict conditions and will be recalled if they break the rules.”
