SCORCHIO..

Brit’s going to be hotter than Barca

- ■ by ALAN JOHNSON news@dailystar.co.uk

BALMY Britain will be hotter than Barcelona next week when a mini-heatwave sends temperatures soaring to 21C.

A high-pressure system heading our way means the first proper blast of sun is on the cards from Monday.

Weathermen reckon the mercury will be four degrees warmer than in Spain.

Other European hotspots like Rome and Athens will also be cooler with highs of 17C and 20C respectively.

Met Office forecaster Chris Fawkes said: “Gradually through Sunday and Monday it becomes drier and eventually warmer, the first 20C of the year on the charts in London into Monday.”

The mini-heatwave will be a welcome relief from this week’s relentless downpours and 60mph gales.

Yellow warnings for wind were still in place yesterday and forecasters have refused to rule out more ice and snow.

The Met Office’s Matthew Lehnert said the white stuff could hit parts of Scotland overnight.

The impending hot spell comes as Brits face an even hotter summer than last year’s 40C record breaker. Experts reckon the El Nino phenomenon – the warming of Pacific Ocean water – could combine with global warming and high pressure for scorching temperatures.

Jim Dale, of British Weather Services, said: “What we’ve got to have in place for that extreme heat to happen is climate change and El Nino.

“Then, for the UK to join it, it’s the right synoptic situation – changes in atmospheric pressure causing heat spikes.

“You get into that scenario and we’re very capable of getting back up to 40C in July, August, maybe early September.”
