IMMANUEL GIVEN A LICENCE TO ROAM

- ■ by ADAM HATHAWAY

IMMANUEL FEYI-WABOSO has been handed the freedom of Twickenham in tomorrow’s Six Nations date with Grand Slam-chasing Ireland.

Head coach Steve Borthwick has handed the Exeter wing (left) his first England start with Elliot Daly dropped to the bench. Borthwick has also brought back fit-again scrum-half Alex Mitchell, with Danny Care – who could win his 100th cap – named a replacement and

Leicester’s George Martin in at lock, with Ollie Chessum shifted to blindside flanker.

Feyi-Waboso has been urged not to be a bystander as he seeks to build on his impressive try-scoring cameo two weeks ago at Murrayfield.

He was on for 18 minutes of the 30-21 loss to Scotland, but cut the hosts’ defence to pieces coming off his wing.

And Borthwick wants more of the same.

He said: “After I told him he was starting, he was very grateful and thanked me numerous times and then asked, ‘What do you want from me?’

“There are some nuances, but the message was, ‘I want you to get the ball in your hands as many times as possible’.

“I have seen him several times pop up in the middle and do a pick and go at the ruck because he wants the ball in his hands, and we saw that in the Scotland game.

“That is the encouragement I have for him – get that ball in his hands.” Feyi-Waboso missed last week’s training camp in York because he had to sit medical exams at Exeter University.

But Borthwick had no hesitation in throwing the 21-year-old into one of the biggest examinations in world rugby against the Irish.

He added: “He’s a guy who takes things in his stride.”
