O’NEIL TALKS SENSE
GARY O’NEIL does not want talk about his future to distract from Wolves’ continued progress this season.
O’Neil took over at Molineux on the eve of the new campaign after Julen Lopetegui walked out, with the Spanish coach reportedly unhappy at the financial constraints he would have to work under.
Despite being tipped for a relegation battle, O’Neil (right) has done an impressive job to guide Wolves into the top half of the Premier League table and the FA Cup quarter-finals.
Wolves sporting director Matt Hobbs revealed discussions over a new contract for the 40-year-old were on the agenda.
O’Neil, though, wants everyone’s minds focused on the job in hand, which continues at home to Fulham today before hosting Championship side Coventry, as Wolves look to reach the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley.
“I don’t think my contract situation is where we should be, at this moment in this press conference, with Fulham coming and then Coventry the week after,” O’Neil said.
“It is important that we remain really focused on the team and what we are trying to achieve.
“So as much as I appreciate it and I’m glad that people think that we’ve done well so far, it’s the same message as last week really – we need to keep going, so full focus on tomorrow.”
Former Bournemouth boss O’Neil, who still regards himself as very much a rookie manager, insists he and Hobbs will sort out his future at some point.
He said: “Me and Matt get on really, really well and I am sure when it comes to it, there will be no problems.”
