NASTY BITE: Richard Kiel played henchman Jaws in the James Bond films and could only wear the metal gnashers for two minutes at a time as they were so uncomfortable. He said: “They were in the roof of your mouth and gave a gagging effect.”
● C-3P…OH! Anthony Daniels compared his Star Wars robot costume to Medieval torture. He could barely move inside the outfit, which pinched and scratched, leaving him covered in bruises.
● HIT THE CAN: The original actor playing the Tin Man in 1939’s The Wizard Of Oz ended up suffering a severe allergic reaction to the aluminium powder make-up.
After nine days, Buddy Ebsen ended up in hospital and was replaced in the role.
● POPEYE THE WAILER: Robin Williams wore prosthetic arms to play the spinachmunching hero in a 1980 movie, but they cut off his circulation, leaving him in agony. Filming had to be halted every half hour to get the blood flowing again.
● WILLY WARMER: Making the 2011 movie The Eagle, Channing Tatum sometimes wore a wetsuit. Once, a crew member mistakenly poured a kettle of scalding rather than warm water
into it. He recalled: “It went straight down and pretty much burned the skin off the head of my dick.”
● YULE BE SORRY: It took eight hours a day to apply green latex to Jim Carrey for 2000 film The Grinch. He described it as like being “buried alive”. Film-makers eventually hired an ex-CIA agent to train him in torture-resistance techniques.
● MARVEL MISERY: The blue paint that Jennifer Lawrence wore to play Mystique in X-Men: First Class led to skin irritation as well as boils and blisters. She got to wear a full bodysuit in the subsequent films.
● MIDDLE HURT: Spending five hours daily in makeup to play dwarf Gimli in the Lord Of The Rings movies, John RhysDavies suffered an allergic reaction to prosthetics, which burned the skin under his eyes. ● LINGERIE DOUBTS:
As well as being barely able breathe in her corset for 2018’s The Favourite, Emma Stone added: “After a month, my organs shifted because they have to. It was gross.” ● WEB OF WOE: Spider-Man star Tom Holland struggled with the heat in his costume, inset, saying: “They added in these fans that you could click and it would supposedly cool me down. They worked once.” ● BAT’S HARD: George Clooney said of his time in costume for the 1997 film Batman & Robin: “The suit’s brutal. I’m bolted into this suit – I can’t move.”
