GORDON PUTS PLANS ON HOL-D

- ■ by JEREMY CROSS

ANTHONY GORDON is refusing to book a summer holiday – because he hopes to be heading to Germany to play football instead.

Gordon has been rewarded for his fine form for Newcastle this season with a first call-up to the England squad.

The winger, 23, has been included for the friendlies against Brazil and Belgium at Wembley and is straining at the leash to impress Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate.

So much so that Gordon has shelved plans to book a summer break with his family, because he wants to be on the plane to the Euros.

Gordon said: “I’ve nothing (booked) so far.

“Not that it’s a guarantee or anything like that, but I want to give myself the best possible chance. That’s my goal. My biggest aim at the moment is to be in that squad.

“That’s not going to manifest if I’m booking any holidays.”

Gordon said he was so excited after receiving news he was in the England squad that he couldn’t train properly with Eddie Howe’s men.

He said: “It’s very special. It is hard to describe really, you chase this goal for your whole life, your whole footballing career, and you finally get it.

“It just means everything to me. I found out by text, and when I got it I was so happy.

“I found out just before training and, sorry to say, training just didn’t matter that day. It just played on my mind all day. Tripps (Kieran Trippier) was next to me, and he was the perfect person to have next to me.

“I showed him the text, and he was buzzing for me.”

Gordon qualified for Scotland through his grandparents, but said there was never a chance of him choosing them over England.

He added: “It was never a thought for me, and that is no disrespect to Scotland at all.

“I have just been tunnel visioned on playing for England since I have been five or six years old, and nothing could ever shake that off.

“I could never forgive myself if I had never got to this point.

“Playing for England is a dream I have had from so young and nothing else has ever entered my mind at any time.”
