HARV ON TARGET TO GATE-CRASH EUROS

- By GARY CHAPPELL

HARVEY ELLIOTT pressed his claim for a late call-up for England’s Euros squad with two goals in Baku.

The Liverpool midfielder, 20, (right) took his tally to seven goals in six matches and is now the top scorer across the Under-21s Euros qualifying campaign.

Elliott will hope to catch Gareth Southgate’s eye again against Luxembourg in Bolton on Tuesday.

Chelsea’s Noni Madueke scored his fourth of the campaign, with Jaden Philogene and Elliott netting after the break before debutant Archie Gray added the fifth in the 88th minute as the reigning European champions drew level on points with Group F leaders Ukraine.

Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers had four chances in less than 10 minutes but the breakthrough did not come until the 25th via a Liverpool connection. Reds midfielder Tyler Morton lofted a cross to the far post where Elliott’s brilliant first touch with his right foot allowed him to poke the ball home with his left.

Azerbaijan’s right was exposed again in the 29th minute when Philogene broke and crossed low for Madueke to turn it in aided by a deflection off defender Seymur Mammadov.

Philogene added the third seven minutes into the second half, although he knew little about it.

Morton’s corner picked out Taylor Harwood-Bellis and his downward header deflected in off the winger, who had turned his back on the ball.

Rogers did all the hard work for Elliott’s second, holding off Mammadov to cross for his team-mate to score from six yards, with Ramin Nasirli scoring an 86th-minute consolation after James Trafford had pushed Samir Abdullayev’s shot into his path.

Gray slotted home just five minutes after coming on as a substitute.
