Page set to write new chapter of Welsh success

- by MARK PEARSON

FIVE days after firing four past Finland, Wales face a final date with destiny as they aim to power past Poland and secure one of the final three places at this summer’s Euros.

A tough group of France, Netherlands and Austria await the successful side but the big achievement for Robert Page’s (right) team would be to reach Germany.

They are just 90 minutes away from realising that dream after a dominant display on Thursday despite having less of the ball, a scenario they will likely face again on Tuesday.

Poland themselves sailed into this play-off final, hitting Estonia for five, although the visitors were reduced to 10 men early on. It is the recent history that will worry Wales, beaten by Poland in each of their last six meetings, the most recent being narrow defeats in both games in their latest Nations League campaign.

But they are on a sevenmatch unbeaten streak and have home advantage where they have lost just six of their last 33 matches.

It is extremely tight in the market with Wales edging favouritism at 7-4, with Poland 9-5 and the draw priced at 2-1.

While it will in all likelihood be a tense and nervy affair with what is at stake, given the fact these sides scored nine goals between them on Thursday and Wales have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last four games, both teams to score at Evens is worth a second look.

The other play-offs will see Ukraine (4-6), who left it late to beat Bosnia last week, take on Iceland (9-2) while Georgia (5-2) bid to make their first major tournament when they host 2004 winners Greece (5-4).
