HE’S REAL FAMILY GUY

- ■ by DAVE CRAVEN

SAM BURGESS insists he’ll never get bogged down as a 24/7 head coach.

The Warrington chief has made a fine start to life at Halliwell Jones Stadium but he maintains it’s crucial he doesn’t become obsessed.

Burgess said: “I’ve got a young family. A beautiful fiancee Lucy and a little daughter who’s six months old. That’s a huge part of my life. It’s healthy to balance it.

“I work long hours but, from my point of view, I get in and get my work done so when I go home I can be a good father and partner.

“It’s the other half of my life. It only makes sense for that to be a great relationship.”

While brother Tom continues charging on with South Sydney and England, what do retired rugby-playing siblings George and Luke think of his decision to leave Australia, head home and enter the brutal world of being a head coach?

Burgess said: “I don’t think they reckon I’m mad. They know I love the game and I’m passionate about making things better, or making environments better.

“So I don’t think they were surprised. They might sometimes wish I was in business with them. We part-own a company called Wealth Street in Australia.

“It’s wealth progression through property developments. I’m involved with it but not on a day-to-day basis like those boys.

“They are enjoying it. They’re helping people create wealth and they are passionate about that. They all miss the sport. We all do.

“But they are really enjoying the next stage of their lives.”

And Burgess is enjoying making Wolves competitive again.

He said: “We’re improving. And that’s the challenge, to keep doing that. We’ve got a long way to go.”
