BIG BOYS THE BEST OF BRITISH

- FRANK WARREN Interview by CHRIS McKENNA

BRITISH boxing is enjoying its heavyweight golden era.

In my time in the sport, I’ve never known us to have such talent from the elite world champion in Tyson Fury to the rising superstars like Moses Itauma.

In between, we have the likes of Anthony Joshua, Daniel Dubois, Joe Joyce and more.

That brings me to last weekend’s entertaining British and Commonwealth clash between Fabio Wardley and Frazer Clarke.

It was certainly a fun watch and I don’t want to knock either man but it was a tough fight for both of them, given how many punches they took.

It had us on the edge of our seats but there have been plenty of more skilful heavyweight showdowns for the British title in the past. Yet it was evidence of the exciting times we are having with heavyweights in this country.

When Tyson becomes undisputed champion on May 18 by beating Oleksandr Usyk, then this country will no doubt be the epicentre of the division.

Tyson will have all the belts, be the first to be undisputed since 1999 and he will be looking down on the rest of them.

But they’ll all be looking up and getting ready for their chance. Joshua has held titles before and will want another chance, while Dubois is getting closer to another crack too.

Joyce is rebuilding from his defeats and I’m sure Wardley and Clarke will have ambitions.

Then there is Moses, who I’m hoping will soon be in 10-round action. He’s getting his man strength now but is still only 19.

Britain is the ruling nation of the heavyweight division and, looking at the talent pool, it is going to be for some time.
