Ferguson wants perfect Trophy triumph

- ■ EXCLUSIVE by DANIEL MARSH

DARREN FERGUSON is determined to savour the occasion this time around as Peterborough bid to emulate their 2014 triumph in the EFL Trophy a decade on.

Posh will lock horns with Wycombe in an all-League One affair at Wembley tomorrow afternoon.

Ferguson (left) was in charge when Peterborough beat Chesterfield 3-1 there 10 years ago but he does not have fond memories of the match.

“We didn’t play well on the day. We won but they were the better team,” said the Scot. “As a manager you always want to see perfection, if you can, on a day like that, but the most important thing is winning.

“This time I hope we can win again and also that maybe I can enjoy it a little bit more.

“But ultimately it’s not really about me – it’s about this young group of players going to Wembley and doing themselves justice.” Rival manager Matt Bloomfield has revealed he still turns to his old Wycombe gaffer Gareth Ainsworth for advice.

The Chairboys are seeking their first-ever silverware as a professional club.

And although Bloomfield, 40, is firmly his own man, he still picks up the phone to close pal Ainsworth, who was in charge of Wanderers for 10 years.

Bloomfield said: “We speak a lot. Behind our professional relationship, we have a personal one where we’re friends and mates. We were team-mates, room-mates and we speak regularly. That will never change.

“I’ve touched on him from time to time – it would be silly not to with the experience he has.”

Ainsworth will be working for Sky Sports as a pundit tomorrow.

Wycombe were route one under him but Bloomfield has changed the style since taking over in February 2023.

He added: “There have been some really tough moments here, following on from a legacy like I did.

“If anyone thought it would be easy, it wasn’t me.”
