1 In 1884 the four-man crew of wrecked yacht Mignonette left the sailors in a lifeboat without provisions. Three weeks in, Tom Dudley and Edwin Stephens chose to kill their cabin boy, who had fallen ill after drinking sea water. The case shaped a British common law that necessity is not a defence to a charge for murder.

2 The Ukraine famine of 1932, caused by Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, resulted in more than 2,500 people sentenced for cannibalis­m after being forced to eat those who had died of starvation. Children were also stolen and murdered for food.

3 They tore strips off enemies’ backs in the reign of China’s Tang dynasty. Revenge cannibalis­m was popular at the time.

4 Christian apologist St Jerome wrote a treatise called Against Jovinianus where he claimed the ancient tribe the Attacotti, who raided Roman Britain between 364-368, were cannibals, some choosing human buttocks to feast upon.

5 US ship the Essex was attacked and sunk in 1820 by a sperm whale, leaving surviving sailors forced to turn on each other for a meal. Three months after going down, five out of 17 men were still alive, as revealed writings by first mate Owen Chase and cabin boy Thomas Nickerson, which inspired Herman Melville’s novel Moby-Dick.

6 A Uruguayan rugby team was on its way to Chile when its flight crashed into the Andes mountains in a survival tale which became known as the Miracle Of The Andes. The survivors ate their dead team-mates, who had been preserved in the snow. Netflix series Society Of The Snow retold the story.

7 During WWII, some Japanese soldiers would rip flesh from POWs while they were still alive after being thrown into pits and left to die.

8 The Nazi siege of Leningrad during WW2 saw around 2,000 cases of cannibalis­m recorded with half-eaten bodies found on the streets and parents forced to feed their kids with the flesh of their deceased siblings. 9 Considered one of the most

brutal raids in history, during the French and Indian war of 1759, the village of St Francis in Canada saw the men of US colonial Colonel Robert Rogers scoff down the human remains they came across.

10 When American pioneers The Donner Party found themselves stuck in the snow of the Sierra Nevada mountains, they ate their dead. Two Native American guides were also murdered to be feasted on.
