BUT CHARLIE MISSED

-

Rolling Stones remain indestructible after kicking off yet another spectacular tour.

But they still miss the “chaos” of late drummer

Charlie Watts.

The band’s Hackney Diamonds tour launched in front of 72,000 fans at Houston’s NRG Stadium, Texas, on Sunday – their second jaunt without Watts, who passed away in 2021.

Darryl Jones, who has been bassist with the Stones for over 30 years, revealed pre gig: “With Charlie, it’s an interesting thing, he was this steady musician, but it was also quirky. “You can have Steve Jordan – who is playing in his place now – who you would consider to be a more educated and learned musician. But he can’t create the same kind of chaos or quirkiness that

Charlie did. Charlie really was an enigma!

“Charlie collected very particular antique cars but he didn’t drive. He was a very public but private person, these contradictions.”

The Stones continue to celebrate Charlie’s legacy with a breathless set which began with Start Me Up and ended on Satisfaction.

Mick Jagger and the boys don’t just miss Charlie Watts the drummer, they miss everything about him, including his sartorial style.

Darryl revealed: “When Charlie was really dressed up it was rare to see somebody that dressed up without him looking like a mannequin.

“He would take me to his shirt tailor in Tokyo, his cobbler in London where you get a pair of shoes for a couple of thousand pounds.”

Resplendent in a silver pinstripe jacket, perhaps Mick Jagger was paying homage to Charlie’s sense of style.

Bouncing all over the stage Jagger continues to defy age and incredibly he’ll be a week off his 81st birthday when these 19 US concerts finish in July.

Three new Hackney Diamonds songs made the new show including Angry, Mess It Up and an epic Sweet Sounds Of Heaven with Chanel Haynes giving the Lady Gaga parts extra power.

Keith went solo for Little

T & A and bassist Darryl admits that’s always his favourite moment: “Every night it’s a bit different, Keith never plays the same thing twice!”
