The day after an election is a perfect time to tune into HAVE I GOT NEWS FOR YOU (9pm, BBC1) to hear the scathing comments that team captain and expert satirist Ian Hislop is bound to make about the politicians who just came a cropper at the ballot box. Paul Merton will throw in a few scatalogical bons mots and we’ll be laughing, literally.
Of course, the show can be a bearpit for guest stars who can’t keep up with the witty repartee, but we’re likely to get a few laughs from up-and-coming comedian Chloe Petts tonight, as well as searing insights from the BBC’s Chief International Correspondent Lyse Doucet.
(If you don’t know her name, you’ll recognise her highly distinctive accent.)
Afterwards, you can find out what happens to Romesh Ranganathan’s endearingly downbeat dad Jonathan in the final two episodes of bittersweet com-dram AVOIDANCE (9.30pm, BBC1). The self-deprecating, unsure Jonathan, who finds relating to others a bit of a minefield, is still eager to get back with his ex-wife, Claire (Jessica Knappett), yet here he is, entangled in a liaison with the attractive Megan (Aisling Bea).
Finding a way to end things with Megan before Claire finds out won’t be easy for someone who has trouble choosing what colour socks to wear. It’s a sweet and truthful look at a bloke who isn’t one of today’s thrusting alpha types, but is rather buffeted by the tides of life.
Meantime, there’s a lively subplot about Jonathan’s sister Danielle (Mandeep Dhillon) and her wife Courtney (Lisa McGrillis), whose baby arrives unexpectedly early.
