Squeaky Brum time for Gary in must-win clash

- ■ by NEIL MOXLEY

GARY ROWETT believes Birmingham will win their survival fight if they can defeat Norwich.

Nothing less than victory will do for the Blues as they seek a route out of the drop zone.

If that happens, it means that defeat for one of Plymouth, Sheffield Wednesday or Blackburn will earn Blues a last-day reprieve.

The interim boss said: “If we win and others win, then good on them. They’ll have done their job, just like we will have done.

“And, at that point, if we haven’t got the right points then what will be, will be. But my belief is that if we win, there’s a very good chance we will be in the division.”

Rowett (left) has picked up eight points from seven matches so far. But others too have picked up as the trap door moves ever closer.

He was involved in final day drama 12 months ago with Millwall but the Lions were playing for a different prize.

He said: “I’ve been involved in top-end matches like these, such as last season at Millwall when we needed to win to get into the top six. We were 3-1 up at half-time and we ended up relinquishing that.

“What you learn from that is that you can’t control every element.

“All you can do as a manager is plan for every eventuality and give the players the tools to deal with those moments.

“Pressure can change decision-making. We’ve got to make sure we cope with that and use that as a springboard for the performance.

“We’ve got a great opportunity. We know what it means to the fans. We know how bright the future is. What we must do is make it a fabulous end to the season.”

Rowett’s own position is as yet unclear.

Tony Mowbray remains as full-time manager but the situation has been put on hold until after the season is over.
