McKenna’s men ready to get back to the big time
THE battle to join Leicester back in the Premier League is the big talking point on the final day of the Championship season today.
Ipswich are in the driving seat after beating Coventry on Tuesday – a single point at home to all-but relegated Huddersfield will see the side managed by Kieran McKenna (right) back in the top tier for the first time since 2002. They are 1-5 for the win and just 1-25 to get at least the point they need.
It would leave Leeds in a play-off spot as they host Southampton this lunchtime in a match that could well be a rehearsal for a play-off final in three weeks’ time.
Leeds are 8-15 to win this match and extend their six-point superiority over the Saints, who in turn are 11 points clear of the rest.
It could be that this pair will fight it out at Wembley in football’s richest match on May 26.
The final two spots in the top six will be taken by Norwich, West Brom or Hull.
The three sides are separated by just three points going into the final day, and a point for both Norwich and West Brom will secure a play-off spot.
At the bottom, two relegation spots are still to be decided. As things stand, it will be Huddersfield and Birmingham who will be joining Rotherham in League One next season.
Birmingham are 4-9 to go down and will need at least a draw at home to Norwich to stand any hope of survival.
Plymouth are teetering on the right side of the dotted line and the Pilgrims are 5-2 to be relegated and will look to home advantage to keep them up as they host Hull.
Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn Rovers will also be looking over their shoulders but know a point will keep their current status.
