WILLIAMS EYES FIRST OF MANY

- ■ by MEGAN FERINA

RACHEL WILLIAMS believes Women’s FA Cup glory over Tottenham could herald a new era for Manchester United.

Marc Skinner’s side, having reached a second successive Wembley final, will look to clinch their first major piece of silverware since the side was launched in 2018 and atone for an otherwise miserable season.

“I do think people forget that United Women are only five, six years old,” said forward Williams ahead of tomorrow’s final.

“It’s a club that wants to win things. They invest in us. We’ve got the best of everything to be the best players we can be.

“This could be the start of us bringing silver-ware to the club.”

While United are bidding to make up for their fifth-placed WSL berth, maiden finalists Spurs are bidding to cap a transformative season under boss Robert Vilahamn.

Former United striker Martha Thomas, 27, is one player thriving under the Swede.

Thomas was a late substitute in United’s FA Cup loss to Chelsea last season but has notched double-digit goals in all competitions for Spurs, including the winner against Leicester in the semi-finals.

However, Thomas played down talk of a revenge mission.

“I don’t think you need any more extra motivation than an FA Cup final,” she said.

“Sometimes you have to take a leap and hope it works out. In this case, it felt like the right fit and the way the season has gone validates that a little bit.”
