Wachau Steep vineyards on primary rock that follow the curve of the Danube. Ideal for structured white wines.

Kremstal Surroundin­g the riverside town of Krems, this region has vines on primary rock and loess. Excellent whites, especially Grüner Veltliner, and some good reds.

Kamptal Similar in climate and terroir to Kremstal and best suited to white wines.

Traisental The vineyards line a tributary of the Danube and produce fine Grüner Veltliner from mixed soils.

Wagram A large region just west of Vienna along the Danube, best known for opulent Grüner Veltliner and other varieties.

Weinvierte­l Vast but ill-defined region between Vienna and the Czech and Slovak borders to the north and east. Known for Grüner but many other varieties thrive.
