Sauternes vintage down

Decanter - - A MONTH IN WINE -

Sauternes producers have warned that 2018 volumes will be low because of mildew and hail that struck vineyards in the southwest corner of the appellation.

Château Guiraud has confirmed it will not make a ‘ first wine’ from the Sauternes 2018 vintage after hail destroyed 95% of grapes on 15 July. ‘ I’ve never seen that in 40 years of experience,’ estate director Xavier Planty told Decanter.

September rain kicked off an ‘excellent spread of botrytis’ at Château d’Yquem, but it will have about 20% less 2018 wine than its average potential harvest, according to director Sandrine Garbay.
