Affordable claret

Decanter - - LETTERS -

You published my letter in your August issue, lamenting the lack of good affordable Bordeaux, especially in the high street. I was despairing of ever finding a bottle that didn’t break the bank or didn’t end up down the sink.

I was pleasantly surprised at the response from your readers, which included suggestions that went some way to restoring my faith in finding an affordable claret that I didn’t find undrinkable. I particularly single out Richard Southern from nearby Hatfield, who recommended that I visit a local independent retailer close to me and try a bottle of Château Buisson-Redon 2016. This was a real wine epiphany and – at an unbelievable £9.95 – better than most high street bottles at two, or even three times the price.

Also a special mention for Andy Howard MW for his article on Bordeaux reds under

£20 (Bordeaux 2020 supplement). I’ve tried a couple of his picks and again it’s made me believe that there is indeed good-value and good-quality Bordeaux out there beyond the bland supermarket offerings. All this coming from a confirmed Spanish wine lover who dismissed Bordeaux in the past. Not any more! Dave Cronin, Hertfordshire
