■ Screaming Eagle, Harlan Estate, Opus One and Shafer have been named among wineries set to release wines direct from their cellars for sale at the first Napa Valley Library Wine Auction in February. Organiser Napa Valley Vintners said the sale would feature more than 100 lots in total. Hosted by Zachys, online bidding will open on 11 February and close with a ‘live auction’ on 20 February.

■ Priorat producer Celler Vall Llach said it was heartbroke­n after heavy snow caused a winery roof to collapse on top of wine stocks from the 2018, 2019 and 2020 vintages, plus winery equipment. It shared a video of the scene on Twitter and said it hoped to rebuild. The full extent of damage wasn’t yet known, said wine writer and Decanter contributo­r Miquel Hudin on his website, www.hudin.com.

■ The new Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025 publicatio­n has ignored calls to cut the daily alcohol limit for men. ‘ Moderation’ means two drinks maximum for men and one for women, ‘on days when alcohol is consumed’, the guidance says, but it adds that even drinking within the guidelines may pose health risks. One drink is five US fluid ounces of wine, or nearly 150ml, at 12% alcohol.

■ Twelve bottles of Bordeaux red wine and 320 vine canes have returned to earth aboard a SpaceX craft after a year at the Internatio­nal Space Station. Researcher­s at the University of Bordeaux’s ISVV institute plan to analyse the wines and vines. ‘ We’re going to look at everything that has evolved,’ said Nicolas Gaume, CEO and co-founder of start-up Space Cargo Unlimited, which led the project.
