The Vesper Martini
‘ Three measures of Gordon’s, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it’s ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel. Got it?’ These instructions from James Bond in chapter seven of Ian Fleming’s 1953 novel Casino Royale introduced the world to the Vesper Martini. Bond’s signature Martini is named after double-agent character Vesper Lynd, whom he meets in chapter eight. Kina Lillet vermouth is no longer produced, so try using Lillet Blanc instead (Alc 17%, £ 16.20-£ 19.95/ 70cl Distillers Direct, Gerry’s, Master of Malt, Ocado, The Whisky Exchange).
