Boy, 6, fights for life after crash horror

WITNESSES SAY STRETCH OF ROAD IS ‘SO DANGEROUS’

A SIX-year-old boy has been left fighting for his life by a serious crash in Normanton.

The youngster, who has not been named, in at Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre after the incident in Newdigate Street on Tuesday.

A friend of boy’s mother said: “The boy is in hospital with a broken leg and head injuries. The school told us it’s very serious. The crossing is so dangerous. All the parents going to the school cross this road with children. We need a lollipop man here.”

A SIX-year-old boy has suffered potentiall­y life-threatenin­g injuries following a serious crash in Normanton.

The youngster, who has not been named, is currently receiving treatment at Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre after the incident in Newdigate Street on Tuesday.

Witnesses have spoken of their shock and sadness after the incident and have said they hope the youngster makes a full recovery.

One woman, who did not wish not to be named, said she was talking to the little boy’s mum in Newdigate Street, when the accident happened.

She said: “Suddenly he ran out and was hit by a car going past. A lot of things happened all of a sudden, it was very scary.

“The passenger in the car was crying and the boy’s brother and sister were watching. My daughter was there too, and she is so upset.”

Another friend of the mum, who did not wish to be named, said: “The boy is in hospital with a broken leg and head injuries. The school told us it’s very serious. The crossing is so dangerous. All the parents going to the school cross this road with children. We need a lollipop man here.”

Another passer-by, who has lived in Normanton for 40 years, said he got caught up in the traffic after the incident happened at 3.30pm on Tuesday.

Ranjit Basir, of Normanton, said: “The ‘slow turn’ sign needs to be moved closer to the lights. The road is so dangerous.”

A parent of a child at the school said she crossed the road five minutes before the crash happened.

Amy Hill, 33, who lives in Normanton, said: “It’s frightenin­g. I live just around the corner and do this route every day. It’s horrible to think about a child getting run over.”

The road was closed for more than three hours on Tuesday while officers investigat­ed. The surroundin­g streets were gridlocked because of the closure at around 3.30pm.

Diversions were in place at the Foresters Park end of the road with vehicles being sent down Balaclava Road, Sinfin Lane and then onto Osmaston Park Road.

A police spokesman confirmed a six-year-old boy was involved in a collision with a blue Volkswagen Passat. He said: “At around 3.30pm on Tuesday, October 2, a blue Volkswagen car collided with a six-yearold boy on Newdigate Street in the Normanton area of Derby. The boy is receiving treatment at Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham for potentiall­y life-threatenin­g injuries.”
