Vulnerable man in 70s pays out to suspected fraudsters who said he needed roof repairs
A VULNERABLE Derby man in his 70s has been targeted by suspected fraudsters who took a large amount of money from him.
An unknown tradesman called unannounced at the man’s home in Maddison Avenue, Chaddesden, and suggested he needed his roof repairing, say police.
The work started and it is claimed the man made three payments by the time police were informed on Thursday, September 20.
Police say the money the man paid to the workmen was “hugely disproportionate” to the work carried out.
Police have arrested two men, aged 24 and 25, on suspicion of fraud by false representation. They have been released under investigation.
Det Chief Insp Gavin Owen said: “We would strongly advise anyone against agreeing to have work done by someone who calls unannounced at your house. In this case, the amount of money charged was hugely disproportionate to the level of work carried out.
“The victim in this case is elderly and vulnerable and we are keen to hear from anyone who has any information or may have seen the men involved.”
Det Chief Insp Owen is urging the public not to deal with a business that calls unannounced at their door. Police have asked people to lock their back door before answering the front door.
They also say people should use a spy hole, chain or window to see the caller before they answer the door.
Det Chief Insp Owen said: “We’re urging local people, especially elderly and vulnerable residents, to take notice of the crime prevention advice in a bid to stop themselves being targeted.
“Take advice from family, friends or reputable traders to check if the work really needs doing and always use approved and trusted traders. Make sure you ask them to provide you with written contact details and always get a contract signed before work begins. Anyone who knows an older friend, family member or neighbour, please pass on the information to them too and keep a lookout for them to ensure they are okay.” Anybody who has any information about the incident, or who witnessed it, are asked to call police on 101 and quote reference number 18000452183.
