Attack of the snacks

-

BRITAIN’S worst food offenders are named and shamed in this revelatory series that aims to save families cash and boost their health.

In this episode, Gregg Wallace and Chris Bavin help Poppy and Emma Montgomery-Ward and their three-year-old twins Piper and Beckett.

The mums say they are just too busy to eat well after their evenings are ruled by putting the toddlers to bed.

For the adults, nachos for dinner and Party Rings for

breakfast means they are basically living on crisps and biscuits.

But some of their bad habits are quite relatable. Have you ever gone shopping, loaded up your trolley, got home and realised you’ve got zero actual dinners?

This family also has several snack boxes, stuffed to the brim with sugary treats.

And the whole sorry saga is costing them more than £150 a week, around £60 more than the national average food spend a week for a family of four.

Gregg and Chris remove all the branded labels, then suggest some easy recipes, such as homemade beans on toast. But will the kids eat beans that don’t mean Heinz?

Elsewhere, there’s a fascinating little lesson in the sugar and fat content of our favourite condiments.

You may or may not want to hear that one tablespoon of mayo is equivalent to five chicken nuggets.

And Chris helps Poppy to tackle her rundown allotment to see if they can get the weeds out and the veg in.

As ever, you’ll watch this show full of good intentions for your own food shop.

Now go and empty that snack cupboard into the bin...
