Kyle and Maitham recognised in national apprentice awards
TWO Derby apprentices have been recognised with national awards.
The award-winning duo, engineering apprentice Kyle Stewart and Morrisons apprentice Maitham Rashid fought off the competition to bring the titles back to the city.
DEB Chemicals worker Kyle was named National Apprentice of the Year at Learning Unlimited’s National Apprenticeship Awards.
Kyle’s dedication, strong work ethic and willingness earned him the award and his managers and colleagues were there to see him collect the prize at Pond’s Forge in Sheffield.
He said: “I’m buzzing. It feels amazing to have won Apprentice of the Year.
“It was a total surprise to win, I’ve been an apprentice at DEB for twoand-a-half years and I’ve enjoyed every single moment, meeting people that I will never forget.
“I am really grateful for how the company has invested in me, and keeps on doing so, and I cannot think of a better place that I could be right now.
“This apprenticeship has provided me with the skills and knowledge required to be successful engineer. It Kyle Stewart being presented with his Apprentice of the Year award, above, and Maitham Rashid with his Retail Apprentice of the Year award
has also made me the person that I am today.”
Morrisons worker Maitham Rashid took home the Retail Apprentice of the Year award at the Asian Apprenticeship awards in Birmingham.
Delighted to beat the competition, Maitham said: “The prospect of working alongside experts in the retail industry and undergoing practical and theoretical training enticed me.
“I have always been a person who
likes to enjoy things at a fast pace and I can honestly say, retail does pace. The apprenticeship has allowed me to grow as an individual allowing me to become confident, responsible and organised.
“This is shown through me running my own department (stock and systems), doing key presentations within university and meetings and through the trust I have built with my team and other colleagues in my store.”
Head judge Olga Bottomley said:
“Maitham’s passion for his apprenticeship and for retail as a sector really shone throughout his application. He has really embraced the opportunities Morrisons have given him.”
“Maitham is an excellent example of how apprentices can have a very positive and wide ranging impact on their organisation and I wish him well in his career.”
Nearly 500 people attended the annual event and Jasmine Kundra, from this year’s BBC The Apprentice, was the guest speaker.
Isa Mutlib, the Awards Project Director, added: “The Awards was a spectacular event and really celebrated the brightest and best British Asian Apprentices and the commitment of their employers and learning providers.
“We hope we have encouraged more young British Asians to consider apprenticeships, and more employers to provide opportunities to benefit from the skills that apprentices bring.”
