Fight rages in ‘worst’ city street

- By ANNA WHITTAKER anna.whitaker@reachplc.com

Two men trade blows in St Peter’s Churchyard, off the notorious Green Lane. THE pictures, above, show the moment a fight broke out between two men near a city centre street labelled ‘the worst in Derby.’

Passers-by looked on astounded as one man repeatedly kneed another in the head in St Peter’s Churchyard, off Green Lane, just after 2pm on Wednesday. A video has been viewed more than 60,000 times on Facebook.

The 27-year-old man who filmed the video, who does not wish to be named, was on a course with DBC Training when he heard the commotion outside.

He said: “It was pretty funny because it was pointless. There was no concern for either of them because, as you can see, they couldn’t punch their way out of a wet paper bag.

“It was more ‘handbags at dawn’ rather than a fight to be honest.”

He said the row started when one man started shouting at another who was sat in his car.

He added: “There were about 15 of us in my class watching and workmen across the road too.” He said he is tempted to turn off the notifications on his phone due to the huge number of people sharing the video.

Katie Dean, who works in the area, said fights happen ‘every day’ in St Peter’s Churchyard.

She said: “We see that sort of thing all the time so we’ve stopped looking out of the window now. We’re used to it. In this side of Derby it’s just how it is, but it does put a downer on the area.” A business owner, who did not wish to be named, said: “This is the worst street in Derby. Things kick off every half-an-hour. “There’s always somebody having a fight or swearing. Coronation Street has nothing on Green Lane.” A spokesperson for the police said: “We were called by a member of the public at 2.10pm on 12 December to reports of a fight between two men in St Peter’s Churchyard, off Green Lane, in the city centre.

“No arrests have been made and our enquiries continue. We are aware of a video circulating on social media, and would ask anyone with any further information to call us on 101, quoting incident number 769-121218.”
