Derbyshire Carers and Specsavers staff marking Carers’ Rights Day in Derby A CITY opticians hosted some of the 25,000 carers in Derby to let them know ‘there is a network of support out there.’

The event, which celebrated Carers’ Rights Day, brought 12 organisations from across the county together.

They all offered information and help for carers at the Specsavers store in the Intu centre, Derby, and in the charity Derbyshire Carers office.

The charity planned the day to raise awareness of the support available to people who look after friends or family members who have disabilities or mental problems.

It is estimated that 25,000 people in the city are carers. That’s about 10% of the population.

Specsavers Derby store director Uan Gohil said: “Carers are a very special group of people.

“We have colleagues, customers and friends with caring roles, and we know that often a carer is so focused on the person they’re caring for that they forget to look after their own wellbeing.

“Carers Rights Day is all about letting people know that there is a network of support out there. There are people to talk to and some help available to get through the difficult days.

“We are proud to support Derbyshire Carers in their brilliant work.”

Narinder Sharma, chief executive at Derbyshire Carers, said: “We have been partnering with Specsavers for some years and have always been impressed with the level of commitment and care they continue to provide our members and their clients.”

Specsavers in Derby provides a wheelchair-friendly location for Derbyshire Carers to use to meet support workers all year round.

Carers Rights Day, which was staged two weeks ago, is run by the national charity, Carers UK.

It aims to bring organisations together to help carers know their rights and find out how to get the help and support they are entitled to.
