Residents in the area spoke of their shock at the incident, which happened close to John Flamsteed Memorial Park and Denby Cricket Club.

She said: “I’ve never seen anything like this before. How awful. It’s a really quiet road.

“It was really icy this morning, though, even when I was walking along the pavement.”

Another woman said she heard “a bang” and ran out of her home to see what was happening.

Tracey Daley, who has lived in Church Street for a month, said: “Someone had called an ambulance to the crash so I went to stop the traffic from coming Emergency services at the scene of the incident in Denby village yesterday. The incident involved a Lexmoto bike and a Range Rover

Derbyshire police asked drivers to “avoid the area” earlier in the day as there was no way through Church Street.

In a statement they said: “There are other routes bypassing the village but we want motorists to take extra care due to black ice and slippery conditions on the roads.

“The village is likely to remain closed for some time. We will update this post as soon as we can.”
