Southern Derbyshire Magistrate­s’ Court heard how Daniel Walford became angry when his girlfriend gave her ex-boyfriend a lift home on Monday, August 27.

In an act of “revenge”, Walford, of Delhi Close, Burton, made his way to the ex-boyfriend’s address, in Overdale Road, Derby, and set fire to the passenger foot well of the Mercedes vehicle.

The court heard how Walford suffered from health issues including ADHD.

Judge Andrew Meachin, who presided over the case, adjourned it so a pre-sentence report could be put together.

Walford was told to return to Southern Derbyshire Magistrate­s’ Court on Monday, January 28. Lynn Bickley prosecutin­g, said: “On Monday, August 27, the defendant’s girlfriend had given her former partner a lift home to his address in Overdale Road, Derby.

“She had a missed call from the defendant and at 9.30pm called him back. He said he was ‘fed up with everything’ and said he was going to ‘do something stupid.’

“As a result of what happened, the relationsh­ip has now ended. “That same evening at 10.50pm, Walford went to Overdale Road. He was seen by witnesses walking towards the address and also seen looking inside the Mercedes.

“The defendant was then seen walking off. The Mercedes was on fire. A window had been smashed and the police were called. “Witnesses got some water and poured it into the passenger foot well where the fire was. “It had been extinguish­ed before the fire service arrived. “A police officer stopped the defendant at 11.05pm and noticed he had cuts on his hand and had a cigarette lighter. His DNA was also found on the Mercedes.”

Amjid Ibrahim, mitigating, said Walford had a number health issues, including ADHD. He also said he issued an early guilty plea and that a report was needed before sentencing. Walford pleaded guilty to arson and was granted bail. Judge Meachin said “This was a form of revenge and you can’t dispute that.
