Delays on A516 after lorry sheds poles

-

The driver of the lorry spent around an hour loading the poles back on his lorry MOTORISTS suffered traffic delays after a lorry shed more than 100 metal poles on the A516 on the road underneath the A50.

The incident happened on Derby Road, approaching the village of Hilton, just after 1pm yesterday afternoon.

The lorry driver told the Derby Telegraph how he was forced to react quickly when he heard a loud bang from his vehicle.

He said: “As we were coming round the roundabout I noticed a movement in the load.

“I stopped the lorry and pulled over, but stupidly I undid the strap and they all fell off. I had to jump out the way.

“There’s about 100 of them and they’re really heavy. We’ve been here about an hour already getting them back on the lorry.”

Another lorry driver stopped to help and load the metal poles back onto the lorry.

Once all the metal was loaded back on the driver then continued his journey to Rotherham.

The driver, who didn’t want to be named, said: “Nothing like this has ever happened before.”

Pictures from the scene show the extent of the metal poles as they criss-crossed along the road.

According to traffic information company Inrix, the incident was cleared just after 3.30pm.
