He had 96 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. SINCE the Brexit referendum, I have continued to work and travel within Europe for my job. I work in the arts and have travelled to many European countries, and continue to do so.

Note at this point that I say ‘European countries’ – not necessarily just those that are part of the European Union (EU).

During my travels I have met many people from all walks of life and read many local and national newspapers.

One of my work colleagues said to me only recently, “Well, when you leave the EU, your mobile phones will stop working!”.

I replied, “I’ve been to many nonEU countries within our great continent and they have had no such issues with mobile phone networks or coverage.

“Actually, Switzerland and Norway have performed pretty well regarding non-EU membership and the mobile signal is great, too”.

I was curious as to why he believed our UK phones would simply stop working on March 29. Reminding me of the hogwash news predicted at the turn of the Millennium which ramped up the absolute doom that would follow as St Mary’s Church bells rang out at midnight, he replied, “I heard it on the news”.

These strange paradoxes of the great unknown regarding Brexit are fuelled, and continue to be fuelled, by the possibility of scandal and dread. Not facts, just propaganda.

I was in Berlin last week and, during breakfast at the hotel, I grabbed the New York Times and, sure enough, Brexit was on the front page. It questioned the Prime Minister and the backstop ‘query,’ not the situation.

We don’t have a backstop situation, it’s a question – a question which has been answered appropriately numerous times and yet dismissed by various over-zealous, noise-making MPs – not ours, I
