A new flavour of Magnum

- MAGNUM P.I. Sky One, 9pm

WE had great telly back in the 1980s didn’t we? Remember Tom Selleck and his sidekick – that moustache? Well this is no match – how could it ever be?

But if you want a nostalgic, action-packed romp that requires no brain power, then this US reboot is fun to watch.

Friday Night Lights actor Jay Hernandez stars as the famous Magnum P.I., private investigator, all-American hero and

ex-Navy SEAL. He has no moustache, so we’re not going for any Selleck comparisons here.

Back from Afghanistan, Thomas Magnum is ready to channel his military skills into private investigation.

He lives in a guest cottage on novelist Robin Masters’ fancy estate where he works as a security constituent to supplement his PI business.

It’s there where former MI6 agent Juliet Higgins (Perdita Weeks) works as major-domo, which is essentially a property manager.

Her second, arguably tougher job is to keep Magnum in line.

The ball-busting yoga-loving flirt, always flanked by two terrifying dogs, makes for a great counterpart to Magnum.

After the extremely 80s style opening credits, everything kicks off of course with a fast-paced chase. You can expect plenty of adrenalinfuelled stunts, stunning scenery and rapid car chases from the off, as well as some comedy blokey banter.

In this first episode there’s a kidnapping that Magnum must get to the bottom of.

Although he’ll need to borrow the estate’s vintage Ferrari to get the job done – because, as we all know, if Magnum is going to pull this off, he’ll need to look cool in the process.
