McAteer’s nephew targets top

-

PROMISING young Australian footballer Hugo McAteer is hoping a stay at Repton School can further his ambition to reach the top in the sport.

McAteer, born in Chester, but resident in Australia since the age of five, is joining year nine at Repton and is the nephew of former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland footballer Jason McAteer.

He will combine his studies at Repton with a spell at Leicester City’s academy, starting there in October.

A midfielder, he has played for Adelaide City and Northern New South Wales at home and was named player of the year for his age group in 2018.

He also joined Gold Coast United FC’s Under-13 National Premier League programme this year.

Repton, probably most well known for cricket, is developing a strong reputation for football, with Watford’s former Derby County midfielder Will Hughes its most successiful former pupil so far.

“We are delighted Hugo is coming from Australia to join us,” said Repton director of football Matt Carrington.

“He looks to be a player of some talent and we are excited to be playing our part in both his football and academic development.

“We are passionate about ensuring that our talented footballers also have strong academic qualifications, so they are prepared for any eventuality.

“For our reputation to be reaching as far afield as Australia is really quite amazing. I know that there is already considerable professional academy interest in Hugo and we will be looking to work with the right approach regarding both his football and academic ambitions.”
